Snow Day on Tuesday, February 2, 2021

Malden Public Schools Families,

Due to predicted weather conditions, there will be no in-person school or remote learning in Malden tomorrow, Tuesday, February 2.  It will be a snow day, with no remote teaching or learning due to high winds and potential power outages during the storm.  All schools and offices will be closed on Tuesday.  We will resume on Wednesday, which will be a normal remote learning day for all students.

This also means that there will be no food distribution program on Tuesday.  Food distribution will resume on Wednesday, February 3, which will be a normal remote learning day.  In person learning for the “gold cohort” of grades Pre K to grade 2 will resume on Thursday, February 4.  We hope you stay safe during the storm.  Thank you.

Superintendent’s Letter to Families

January 28, 2021

Dear Families,

We hope that you are doing well as we begin the second half of the school year and look with hope toward a better 2021.

While we continue to learn and deepen our understanding of remote learning, we are also taking steps to bring our next group of learners back to in-person learning. As a result of collaboration with the Malden Education Association, we have worked toward this shift and look forward to reopening our schools to provide in-person teaching and learning for our PreK-2 students, beginning on Monday, February 1.

Over the past several weeks, we have taken steps to ensure that we are ready for this next shift. Our principals have been working around the clock to develop cohorts of students. Guiding our work is our core belief that the relationship among students, their families, and their teacher is the most important ingredient in a positive school experience. To that end, our principals have done their absolute best to keep students with the same teachers they have had since the beginning of the school year; this has been incredibly challenging given the strict guidelines we must follow to ensure everyone’s safety, but developments such as live streaming have allowed us to make great progress in this area.

There are challenges that we must share with you, however. While keeping students with their teachers was possible in the vast majority of instances, there were a few cases across the district where it was necessary to have the classroom teacher work remotely. In these situations, we have contacted affected families and offered them the choice of staying fully remote with their current teacher or sending their child for in-person learning with the assistance of a qualified substitute who will work in concert with the regular teacher. Regardless of the choice made, it is important to remember that ALL students will be with the regular classroom teacher (teacher of record) on days when they are not in-person. Please remember that only families affected by this situation have been contacted.

We also ask for your grace and patience as we make this next shift. It’s another first for all of us, and there are bound to be bumps along the way. The “growth mindset” that we constantly remind students of is a concept that we must all embrace during this time. Teaching and learning will not look exactly as it did when we closed our buildings almost a year ago. The physical set up of the classroom will look different, masks and social distancing will continue to be the norm, and the delivery of instruction will be adapted to fit this new model. What hasn’t changed, however, is the love we have for our students; they bring the joy to our work and we cannot wait to see them!

Thank you for all you have done and continue to do to be the best partners possible in your child’s education. We know that it has been far from easy and we are so very appreciative of your efforts to juggle the many demands of everyday life and school in your home.

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact your child’s principal. Once again, thank you for your understanding and support.

Sincerely,

John Oteri, Superintendent
Malden Public Schools

K-2 Return Survey Links for Families

K-2 Return Survey Links for Families

At this time, the district has welcomed our high-needs students for in-person instruction on Tuesday January 19th. On Monday, January 25, our grades PreK-2 staff will return to our buildings, with PreK-2 students beginning a hybrid learning model Monday, February 1st.

As part of our planning, we are asking families to fill out this very simple survey below to let us know if your child is going to return on Feb. 1st for in-person learning. We ask that you complete it by the end of the day Thursday, January 21st so Principals can arrange for even classroom cohorts and be able to inform families prior to the start of in-person learning beginning February 1st.

Also on January 19, a MPS Reopening Survey will be sent to all MPS families. We encourage you to share your thoughts with the district through this survey.

At this time, the district plans to welcome our high-needs students for in-person instruction on Tuesday. On Monday, January 25, our grades PreK-2 staff will return to our buildings, with PreK-2 students beginning a hybrid learning model Monday, February 1.

The health and safety of our students, staff, and families remains our top priority. We are following sound protocols aligned with expert health guidance. A summary of Frequently Asked Questions is available on the MPS website at https://maldenps.org/reopening/faqs/.

We recognize that this return to learning comes on the heels of historic and troubling events within our nation. The violence in the U.S. Capitol building last week occured at a time when our students, staff, and families are already shouldering the educational, economic, and health impacts of COVID-19. This global pandemic has separated us from one another at a time when we desperately need to come together and when our students especially need to feel safe.

Despite these challenges, we continue to address the academic, social, and emotional learning needs of all Malden students. Our commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion for every student we serve is unwavering.

To support these efforts, we would like to share a few resources:
National Association of School Psychologists (NASP) – Talking To Children About Violence: Tips for Parents and Teachers
Annenberg Classroom – Understanding Democracy: A Hip Pocket Guide
PBS NewsHour Extra – Facing History and Ourselves
University of Michigan – Guidelines for Discussing Difficult or High-Stakes Topics

I ask for your continued support as we work to create safe and inclusive spaces for children to ask questions, demonstrate empathy in their interactions with others, and develop a variety of opinions and perspectives. Likewise, your support for our collaborative efforts—such as the Massachusetts Partnership for Diversity in Education—to increase diversity in our schools is much appreciated.

On Monday, January 18, there will be no school as we commemorate Martin Luther King, Jr. Day in our community and across the country. More than just a day off, MLK Day is the only federal holiday officially designated as a “day of service” for Americans. To that end, MPS encourages our students and families to find opportunities to volunteer and make an impact in the community on Monday.

While the COVID-19 pandemic limits the number of in-person activities in which we can engage, there are still ways you can make a difference. Consider the following:

Make a donation to or serve at a local food bank.
Donate blood, which is much needed during the pandemic.
Serve as a virtual tutor to other students nationwide.
Order or donate to a local business that may be struggling due to COVID-19.
Check out volunteer opportunities available through the United Way or by visiting https://americorps.gov/join/find-volunteer-opportunity.

These are just a few ideas for your day of service. While MLK Day is a great chance to get started with your volunteering efforts, it can also be a springboard that leads to regular community service throughout the year!

Please do not hesitate to reach out to your child’s school or contact me directly with any questions or concerns. We also encourage you to visit the MPS Reopening Schools web page, at https://maldenps.org/reopening, for more information.

Thank you for your continued support of our students and teachers during these challenging times.

Sincerely,

John Oteri
Superintendent

Daily Screening Protocol for Families

DAILY SCREENING PROTOCOL FOR FAMILIES

Our goal is to maintain a safe environment for children to learn.  P L E A S E,  help us to protect you and your children when coming back to our school.

Students and Families take an active role in trying to keep everyone safe by being honest about symptoms and when they started and not sending kids to school sick.  This is crucial to us being able to continue in person learning.

Everyone must do their part to protect others and follow these guidelines!

  • Check Daily for symptoms before coming to school

MPS COVID-19 Daily Self Checklist

Students must stay home if they are not feeling well, or have symptoms of illness.

  • Please, notify your child’s school nurse with any symptoms of Covid19
  • Call your healthcare provider for further instructions.
  • Self isolate for 10 days, self monitor and get tested for Covid 19.
  • If tested positive, call school for close contact tracing.

  • Mask/face covering must be  worn at all times covering nose and mouth for grades K-12 and strongly encouraged for PreK
    • Covid-19 is spread primarily through droplets that come from the nose and mouth when people cough, sneeze, and speak.
    • The wearing of masks helps prevent the spread of droplets from landing in the eyes, mouth, or mucous membranes of other persons in close contact with infected persons.
    • Exceptions will be made for students with medical, behavioral, or other challenges who are unable to wear masks/face coverings **contact your school nurse for more information about this.
    • You should provide your child with a mask to wear on the way to school and during the school day and send an extra mask in their backpack.
    • No gators or mask with valves allowed
    • Please label each mask with your child’s name
    • Provide small paper bag for mask breaks during the day
    • Cloth masks should be washed daily

Family Educations Sheet available here:

Helping your child wear a mask                Parents of young children

  • Keep your physical distance – whenever possible
    • Physical distance means keeping a safe space between yourself and other people who are not from your household.
    • As COVID-19 is transmitted through respiratory droplets, distance between individuals reduces risk.
    • In classroom settings, six feet of separation is recommended when feasible.  When six feet is not feasible, a minimum of three feet of distance is acceptable as long as everyone is wearing a mask.
    • Your school will likely assign seats or designate cohorts of students to help mitigate the transmission of the virus.
    • Please encourage your child to follow these instructions

  • Hand Hygiene –Use soap and water or hand sanitizer
    • Upon arrival to school
    • Touching any mucous membranes (eye, nose, mouth)
    • Going towards your face (adjusting glasses, fixing your mask)
    • Before eating
    • Before drinking
    • After going to the bathroom
    • If hands are visibly soiled
    • Before putting on and taking off masks
    • Before dismissal

Please help your child learn to wash hands with soap and water or hand sanitizer for twenty seconds at a  time. Video here – What You Need to Know About Handwashing.

MPS Reopening – Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

MPS Reopening – Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Below are some answers to FAQs regarding reopening plans:

What will school schedules look like?

The district is now working with the Malden Education Association regarding the details of our school schedules once we begin our hybrid learning model. It is our goal to have schedules resemble a “normal” school day as much as possible.

Will my child’s teacher change?

If we are able to secure live streaming, we believe we will be able to keep most of our students with the same teacher.

What health and safety measures will be in place?

All K-2 students and staff will be required to wear masks, covering the face and nose, at all times while in our school buildings. We will also provide for social distancing and frequent hand-washing opportunities. Our custodial staff will be cleaning and disinfecting high-touch surfaces throughout the school day.

MASK POLICY

When will students come to school and when will they learn remotely?

Through our hybrid model, we will have half our students in Cohort A and half in Cohort B. Cohort A will attend in-person classes on Mondays and Tuesdays, while Cohort B will attend in-person classes on Thursdays and Fridays. Students who elect to remain remote will be home all five days. Wednesdays will continue to be remote learning days for all students and staff. School buildings will be closed and thoroughly disinfected on these days.

How will cohorts be determined?

Our principals are building cohorts that make the most sense for their building schedules; they are examining sibling lists, services, and student needs to inform the creation of cohorts. Notification of cohort assignments will be on or before January 27th.

How can I request that my child continue with 100% remote learning?

We will continue to offer a full remote learning option for students whose families request it. To discuss this option, please contact your child’s school office as soon as possible.

How will meals work with the hybrid model?

In December, 2020, MPS became eligible for the Community Eligibility Provision program from the state. As a result, all students will receive free lunch. Meals will likely be served in classrooms or other spaces to allow for proper social distancing.

Will lunch be served in school?

We will serve lunch in school adhering to all the protocols and safety guidelines.

Will I see a reduction in P-EBT benefits if my child is engaged in hybrid learning?

If you choose hybrid learning for your student, the amount awarded in P-EBT benefits will decline from $117.20 to $58.60. This decline will not take place if your student remains in remote learning.

Will my child be required to get the flu vaccine?

The Massachusetts Department of Public Health (DPH) is removing the requirement for flu vaccination for attendance in childcare/preschool, primary, secondary and postsecondary education. Preliminary data show that this has been a mild flu season to date, presumably as people have received their seasonal flu vaccine and have been adhering to mask-wearing and social distancing due to COVID-19. Given the intensive Commonwealth-wide efforts regarding COVID-19 vaccination, DPH wants to alleviate the burden to obtain flu vaccination and focus on continuing our COVID -19 vaccination efforts. DPH continues to strongly recommend that everyone age six months and older receive their seasonal flu vaccine each year.

Will there be after-school programs after February 1?

At this point, we cannot implement before- and after-school programs due to health and safety concerns. It is our hope that we can resume these programs before the end of the school year. This will depend on the status of COVID-19 in our community.

Is antigen testing available?

Yes, we now have BinaxNow antigen testing available. This is a very accurate test for people who are symptomatic or believe they may have COVID-19. The test is available in each school’s nurse’s office and merely requires consent from the parent/guardian to administer it to students. The results are available in 15 minutes.

Is there any additional testing available?

Malden Public Schools has applied to be part of the Governor’s offer to do “pool testing” in the schools.  We will update the community once that information is available.
