Welcome to the 2018-19 School Year!

We are excited to begin another year with our amazing students and terrific staff.  We have many new administrators and educators here who will make this the best year for everyone. We are building this year around the tenets of safety, communication, documentation, transparency and continuous student improvement. We foster appropriate relationships and communication for all students and staff predicated on mutual respect, kindness, dignity and appropriate language. Students, adults and guests at all activities and events are expected to speak respectfully to everyone and positively cheer for all participants. With these beliefs, we know Malden Public Schools will continue on a positive and productive trajectory.

As a graduate of the Malden Public Schools, I am honored, grateful and humbled to be your Superintendent. Along with administration team, I am thrilled with the opportunity to lead Malden to the next level. Educationally, we are ready to take the next step collectively and with the support of our community, stakeholders and staff.

Malden offers true 21st Century learning in many different venues. From our Linden STEAM Academy, our fabulous Early Learning Center to Malden High School, collaborative, innovative and cutting edge teaching and learning occurs at all levels. The diversity of our student body is an advantage to our students. In short, Malden is a microcosm of the world and we are demonstrating with excellence what that future will look like.
We strive to build on this great foundation to create enriching learning environments for our students, strengthen the partnerships that help prepare our students to be successful in this global world and increase the connectedness of our students and families to the school.

With a focus on student achievement, we look forward to making this school year another success. Thank you.

With enthusiasm and commitment,
John Oteri
Superintendent of Schools

It is an honor to re-join the Malden Public Schools as the district’s Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum, Instruction, and Assessment. Malden is a city that prides itself on the success of its schools and I am thrilled to be part of such a community.

I recognized very early on the importance of learning and have reaped the rewards of an excellent education. I can vividly recall memories like begging my mother to enroll me in school and the spell I was under when my magical fourth grade teacher inspired me to enter the teaching profession. As a result of those early experiences, I made a commitment to pursue a life in education.

As someone who has been in the field of education for more than twenty years – starting out as a high school teacher, eventually moving to a central office position, and finally combining teaching and administration by taking on adjunct courses at local universities – I have learned much from the many talented educators with whom I have worked. Experience has taught me that students are at the heart of everything we do in a district and that the work done at the school and classroom level is some of the most challenging and important work one could ever undertake. It is my hope that this role will allow me to work with the whole school community to facilitate the learning that ultimately prepares our students to take advantage of the many opportunities that present themselves when one is equipped with a well-rounded education. I look forward to our work together in the coming weeks and months!

The Department of Student Services is here to support all students with disabilities find success and reach their full potential. Our teachers, paraprofessionals, therapists, and related service providers work to provide quality educational and related services to every student with a disability in the least restrictive environment in accordance with state and federal regulations. We offer a wide array of services to ensure that each student is challenged, develops a growth mindset and is taught with dignity as they grow and plan for their future.

Our students are most successful when their parents are informed and active in their education. We do this through team meetings, encouraging participation with our Parent Advisory Council, sharing community resources, and making connections with local and state agencies that support students with disabilities and their families.

Our work is supported through the leadership of team chairs, program managers, assistant principals and principals who work collaboratively with families, parents, and students to ensure success of each child. We do this through effective and regular communication, staying true to the team’s vision for your child, and a commitment to stay in it together.

If you have any questions or comments, please don’t hesitate to contact the team chair or program chair assigned to your child’s school or program or contact my office directly.
