Stop the Stigma Day – Wednesday, March 8, 2023

On Wednesday, March 8, 2023 Malden Overcoming Addiction will hold their annual, #MaldenStopTheStigma day, which first originated in 2015.  A new organization at the time,  Malden Overcoming Addiction (MOA), under the guidance of President Paul Hammersley started the awareness day with the goal of putting an end to the stigma surrounding substance use disorders.

This year Malden Overcoming Addiction will bring “Stop the Stigma Day” into all of the Malden Public Schools and local private schools, Cheverus and Malden Catholic. Members of the MOA team will speak to groups of students in each school.

On Stop the Stigma Day, MOA will be asking the greater Malden community to share a special “Stop the Stigma” image on Facebook and wear a ribbon signifying the fight we are in together to stop the stigma and end addiction.  We’ll encourage people to take a “selfie” and post it to social media with the hashtag #MaldenStopTheStigma on it. Finally, the Malden High School media production team, under the direction of Jim Valente, will produce a video that will be shared on our website and via social media.

Malden Overcoming Addiction (MOA) is a non-profit community partner whose mission is to connect the community with addiction support and recovery services, remove the stigma of addiction, and fight to eliminate overdose fatalities in Malden and surrounding communities. The annual MOA “Stop The Stigma Day” is about “leveraging the collective power of Malden’s community to bring attention to the stigma surrounding addiction.” The stigma associated with substance use disorder prevents many from seeking the help, whether emotionally or physically, that they require.

Schools Open for Malden Public Schools Students on Tuesday, October 18, 2022

We are very pleased to report that the representatives from the Malden School Committee and the Malden Education Association (MEA) reached a tentative agreement on a new three-year contract on Monday night. The tentative agreement reached must be ratified by MEA members and the Malden School Committee.

All schools will reopen for students and staff on a regular schedule on Tuesday, October 18, 2022.

We know that this period of uncertainty has been difficult for parents, students, and staff. We are hopeful that the proposal that received preliminary approval at the bargaining table tonight marks the beginning of a new chapter for our school district, in which we all move forward together to engage in the vital work of teaching and learning.

IMPORTANT NOTICE FOR PARENTS AND GUARDIANS

POTENTIAL Malden Education Association Strike

● The Malden Education Association (MEA) voted on Friday, October 14, to authorize the MEA Board to initiate a strike if a new contract agreement is not reached this weekend.

● At this point, school is scheduled to be in session on Monday, October 17, as usual.

● However, IF the MEA union leaders decide to hold an illegal strike, there will be no school for students on the day(s) that the strike occurs. No decision has been made yet to cancel school.

● In the event of a strike, all other activities would also be canceled for students – including before- and after-school programs, athletic practices and games, and extracurricular activities.

● We encourage families to begin making alternate arrangements for child care, just in case there is a strike.

● All union and non-union Malden Public Schools employees are required to report to work every day, whether in schools or central offices, regardless of any MEA job actions.

Please check this website for the latest updates on this developing situation.
