Malden Students Earn Honors at Middle School and High School Rising Leaders Model UN Conference

On Friday, May 2, students from Malden High School and 7th and 8th grade students from Malden’s Linden S.T.E.A.M. Academy participated in the Rising Leaders Model United Nations (UN) Conference. Malden students earned four awards at the middle school level and three Honorable Mentions at the high school level.

This conference, held at Northeastern University in Boston, MA, featured over 225 students in grades 6-12 from schools across Massachusetts. The conference focused on “Defining and Supporting Climate Refugees.”

At the middle school level, twenty students from Linden’s 7th and 8th grades participated in the conference. Of the twelve awards up for grabs for middle school students, Malden’s students won four of them, more than any other single school. These awards included Best Negotiator awards for the teams representing Estonia, Libya, and Hungary and a Best Public Speaker award for a separate team representing Libya. “More than any award, our kids showed their ability to negotiate, problem-solve, and think critically…I am proud of our kids,” said Lianne Mokfienski-Ramos, Linden’s Model UN advisor.

Ten Malden High School students participated in the conference at the high school level. During the closing ceremonies, Malden High School students received three Honorable Mentions. Faculty advisor Kurtis Scheer shared that, “Our students showed clear evidence of their skill as negotiators and facilitators, successfully passing all of their resolutions in their respective committees.”

“We are very proud of these student diplomats and rising leaders!” said Dr. Timothy Sippel, Superintendent of Malden Public Schools. “These students represented our district exceptionally well and we are excited to continue to support them on their learning journeys.”

About Model United Nations Conferences
Model UN simulations engage hundreds of thousands of students each year, helping them to learn more about the principles of the UN and how it functions. Many of today’s leaders in law, government, business and the arts – including at the UN itself – participated in Model UN as students.
