Mr. Bransfield’s Letter on Innovation

July 2, 2012

Dear Linden Parents:

I am pleased and excited to announce that the Linden School has received the support of the School Committee and the Massachusetts Department of Education to become an Innovation School. Innovation schools are the future of education here in Massachusetts; it gives the school the autonomy to make decisions that best suit the needs of “our” children. The staff has worked tirelessly towards this goal and starting in September we will begin to implement our plan.

The Linden School will become the Linden S.T.E.A.M. (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math) Academy; a school that will place more of a focus on “hands on” project based learning. As the famous quote goes: “When I hear, I forget. When I see, I remember. When I do, I learn.” we believe that taking a hands on approach will benefit all the learning styles we have amongst Linden’s diverse population. We also believe that by integrating the arts, and literacy into subject areas like science and social studies; our children will have a more well-rounded knowledge base that will place them ahead of their peers in our quest to produce 21stcentury learners.

So what does September look like? We have not adopted a school uniform as of yet. This initiative will be considered when we return to school with input from the community, students and teachers. What we will do is begin to see our plan take shape. Teachers will attend professional development to gain greater knowledge on project based instruction. We will look closely at scheduling to ensure our students have appropriate time on learning and a curriculum that coincides with our theme. One change that will differ from the district is we will start school each day at 8:00a.m. and dismiss at 2:30p.m. The entire building will start and end at the same time.

This is an exciting time for the Linden School. I am confident the children of our great school will benefit most from this opportunity. I will continue to update as we move forward.

Sincerely,

Mr. Richard Bransfield

Principal, Linden School
